Colombo is the venue of a number of seasonal pageants and festivals in Colombo, which feature traditional dances, gaily dressed elephants and officials in medieval costum, often held by torch and moon light. The Navam Perahera (Buddhist pageant) is held during the February full moon by Colombo’s lake-side Gangaramaya temple. Two Esala (July-August) pageants are held by the Bellanwila and the Kotte Raja Maha Vihare, Buddhist temples in Colombo suburbs. Kelaniya, app. 9 km. north of Colombo holds a grand pageant at the Duruthu full moon, usually in January.
